Business Printer Repair: When is it Not Worth it?

Printers have a lot of moving parts. That means more often or not, there will come a time when your business printer needs a bit of repair or maintenance.

While sometimes repairing your printer makes absolute sense, sometimes it’s best to simply replace your unit. To help you figure out what makes sense for you, here are five times business printer repair just isn’t worth the trouble.

#1 - Frequency of repairs

Business printers shouldn’t need regular repair more than a couple of times a year.  If your printer is breaking down three or more times a year, you may want to consider investing in a new printer. If it is breaking down multiple times a month, it’s definitely time for a new one.

#2 - Availability of parts

Printer technology is constantly changing. While it isn’t necessary to upgrade your devices every time a new technology comes out, there are benefits to investing in a new machine. The first is access to parts for repair.

As manufacturers start focusing on newer models and technology, they stop producing older out of date parts. That means that it can become increasingly difficult to find parts for older printers. If you are having trouble finding parts, it may be time for an upgrade.

#3 - Printer technology

If you are using out of date technology, access to parts isn’t the only reason it makes more sense to replace your printer than repair it. Investing in the latest technologies comes with a number of benefits, including improved speed, green technology, reduced energy consumption and better features.

#4 - Security

As technology advances, so do the number of security risks. Older printers are more vulnerable to malicious attacks and other external threats. If your business is printing and copying confidential or sensitive information, it may make more sense to upgrade your system instead of repairing it.

#5 - Printing needs

If your  company’s printing needs have changed and your current printer is struggling to meet your expectations, it may not make sense to repair it. If you are using multiple machines to meet your scanning, printing, copying and faxing needs, consider an upgrade to a system that can do it all in one.

You may also want to change your printer if you are printing more or less than you used to. This will help make sure you are optimizing efficiency and reducing operational costs.

#6 - System support

Chances are you’ve run into a situation where you’ve updated your computer and suddenly hardware or software is no longer supported. If you are having troubles connecting your printer to the latest systems, or you are running a computer on an old system so that you can continue using it, it’s time to pass on the repair and get a new printer.
